It is a directive, client centred counselling style for eliciting behaviour change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence. Some peo-ple are able to make decisions without the fear of uncertainty. They make decisions quickly and with minimal amounts of anxiety and fretting over whether or not they have made the wrong decisions. For others, everyday decisions, small or large, can cause dread and worry. Their ability to make any decision is hampered by what is known as ambivalence. Ambivalence is what we experience when we have opposing feelings simultaneously towards an individual, situation or object. Although, we have all experienced ambivalent feelings at some time or another throughout our lives, chronic feelings of ambivalence can be emotionally debilitating. Ambivalent thinking leads to avoidance, procrastination, inhibits emotional growth and maturity, and prevents us from reaching our full potential.
